These are the thoughts that keep me happy

Chew #13 ****1/2
Writer: John Layman
Artist: Rob Guillory
Cover Artist: Rob Guillory
Publisher: Image

What a fantastic read this was. The writing on this title is witty, funny, and completely unpredictable. Mason Savoy makes an appearance as well as sets up the cliffhanger for the next issue. Tony and Colby's relationship is hilarious and continues to develop with every new issue. The obsession with everything chicken in this book is fascinating, as well as the numerous ways people try to maneuver around the no chicken laws. As the characters continue to be developed and new, unique story lines are introduced it is no wonder that this title won the Eisner award for Best New Series. The art continues to be consistent, unique, and very well executed. This is definitely the book you all should be reading.

Uncanny X-Men #527 ***
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Whilce Portacio, Leonard Kirk, Ed Tateo, Jay Leisten
Cover Artist: Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson
Publisher: Marvel

The Five Lights powers on in this issue. The second of the five new mutants has been located in Mexico City and Psylocke and Cecilia Reyes is on hand to take control of the situation. Meanwhile, while Scott and Logan are having a talk over drinks Emma is roaming around town with a variety of men. I think, literarily, the direction that this story is going in is just great. The way that the new mutant's powers are activating is fascinating. The way that their powers initially activate and then stabilize once Hope arrives is great. I'm not exactly sure why Emma was portrayed in such a bad light, but as a reader who despises the character I am hoping this means the end to her cohabitation with Scott Summers. Unfortunately, the art in this book is disastrous. Having been accustomed to Terry and Rachel Dodson's artwork in recent years, and how well it worked with Matt Fraction's story telling abilities, only makes it that much more apparent how much Whilce and Kirk's artwork is more of a hinderance than anything. As anyone can tell you an issue is only as great as the combined effort of the writing and the artwork and in this case the art fails so miserably that it distracts and detracts.

  1. Chew is awesome. I love the way it's written and how it's being drawn, it's fabulous. And the interaction between characters is just brilliant. Tony and Colby rock!

Uncanny is a great read. The art wasn't that great though. Emma scenes were a bit boring, but then again I am heavily biased. The best scenes, in my opinion, dealt with the second new mutant and his gaining his mutant powers. I think that the scenes with the new mutants are fascinating.
